7 signs it’s time to rewrite your website copy
If your business has grown, evolved or changed direction, it might be time to rewrite your website copy
Your website doesn’t have to be terrible to need a rewrite.
Sometimes there’s nothing obviously wrong with it. It just doesn’t quite feel like your business anymore.
Maybe your services have changed. Maybe you wrote the copy in a rush when you first launched. Or perhaps people are finding your website, but they’re not taking that next step.
Good website copywriting should make it easy for people to understand who you are, what you offer and why they should choose you – without making them work too hard to find the answers.
So, is it time to freshen things up?
Here are seven signs your website copy might be ready for a rewrite.
1. Your business has changed, but your website hasn’t
Businesses evolve.
You add services, refine your audience, gain experience and get much clearer about the work you actually want to attract.
But your website? Sometimes it gets left behind.
Take a look at your homepage and ask:
If someone knew nothing about my business, would this still accurately explain what I do today?
If the answer is “well… mostly”, it might be time for an update.
2. It takes too long to work out what you actually do
You know your business inside out. Your website visitors don’t.
They shouldn’t have to wade through five paragraphs or decipher industry jargon before the penny drops.
Strong website copy gets to the point quickly while still leaving room for personality.
Ideally, someone landing on your site should quickly understand:
what you do
who you help
why it matters
what they should do next.
Clear doesn’t mean boring. It just means your reader isn’t left scratching their head.
3. People are visiting… but not enquiring
Getting people to your website is only part of the job.
If they arrive, have a look around and disappear without getting in touch, your copy could be part of the problem.
Effective website copy isn’t just about describing your business. It should answer questions, build trust, show your value and gently guide someone towards the next step.
That’s one of the biggest benefits of working with a copywriter who knows how to write web copy: they can look at your business from your customer’s perspective, rather than from inside it.
4. Your website sounds like everyone else’s
“We provide high-quality solutions.”
“We pride ourselves on exceptional service.”
“We’re passionate about delivering outstanding results.”
There’s nothing technically wrong with those phrases. The problem is that almost any business could say them.
The best website copy sounds like you.
It captures your personality, communicates what makes you different and helps someone get a feel for the humans behind the business.
I recently worked with artist Hosanna Smith to launch her new website. After multiple attempts to do it herself and attempts at using AI she came to me for help – her words had turned into a jumbled mess.
Her words:
“Abby transformed my scattered thoughts into powerful words that captured my business vision as an artist perfectly.”
That’s really what good copywriting should do.
You already know your business. Sometimes you just need someone else to see it from another perspective and help shape the words.
5. SEO was an afterthought
Beautiful writing is important. But ideally, people need to be able to find it too.
That’s where SEO copywriting comes in.
Good SEO website copy considers the words and questions your customers are searching for, then weaves them naturally into useful, readable content.
For example, a landscaper might want to appear in Google or AI overview results when someone searches for landscape design services, while a financial adviser might want to answer questions potential clients are already searching for online about retirement planning.
It shouldn’t feel forced or repetitive.
The goal of SEO website copywriting is simple: help search engines understand what your page is about while keeping the person reading it firmly front and centre.
Clear, engaging website copy can help turn casual visitors into potential customers.
6. Your website feels like hard work to read
Be honest: when was the last time you read every single word on a website?
Most of us scan.
We notice headings. We jump to the section that looks relevant. We skip anything that resembles an enormous wall of text.
Your website copy needs to reflect how people read websites – get to the point quickly and make it easy.
Clear headings, shorter paragraphs, simple language and well-placed calls to action can completely change how a page feels.
Often, a rewrite isn’t about adding more.
It’s about making the words you already have work harder.
7. You’ve outgrown the copy you wrote yourself
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with writing your own website copy.
When you’re starting out, DIY often makes perfect sense.
But there can come a point when your business has grown and the original words simply don’t reflect the quality of what you now offer.
Maybe you keep rewriting the same paragraph and still hate it.
Maybe your About page has been sitting half-finished for six months.
Or perhaps you’d simply rather spend your time doing the work you’re actually paid to do.
That’s when it can make sense to outsource copywriting.
After I worked with Sage Integrity, Director Stephanie Papadopoulos described working with me: “Abby provided clear, polished content for my website. Abby’s ‘can’ do’ approach and tenacity to learn about the business was extremely helpful.”
A good freelance copywriter (like moi), takes all the ideas, expertise and half-finished thoughts in your head and turns them into something clear, cohesive and recognisably yours.
Do you need a whole new website?
Not necessarily.
If your website looks good, works well and is easy to navigate, fresh copy alone can make a surprisingly big difference.
If you are planning a redesign, though, bringing your copywriter in early can help shape the page structure, messaging and flow before the design is locked in.
Words and design tend to work much better when they’re allowed to talk to each other.
What is website copywriting?
Website copywriting is the process of writing the words on your website in a way that clearly communicates what you do, connects with your audience and encourages them to take action.
It might include your homepage, About page, service pages, landing pages and other important website content.
An SEO copywriter can also optimise that content around relevant search terms and search intent for Google and AI search.
Is it worth hiring a website copywriter?
If you're struggling to explain what makes your business different, your website feels outdated or writing simply isn't your thing, professional website copywriting services can take a big job off your plate.
And sometimes, having an outside perspective is exactly what your business needs.
